The launch and the international seminar of the Russian edition of The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe were held on Sept 3 at the 39th Moscow International Book Fair.

Co-hosted by Veritas & Mercurius Publishing, a subsidiary of Phoenix Publishing and Media Group, and Russia's Nashe Slovo Publishing House, the event brought together representatives from the publishing industry, academia, and media from both China and Russia to witness the unveiling of this crucial historical document about the Nanjing Massacre, which was presented in its complete and unabridged form for the first time to Russian readers.

Wang pointed out that the upcoming 90th anniversaries of the full-scale outbreak of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Nanjing Massacre in 2027 make this release particularly poignant as a tribute to the past and a hope for the future.

Andrei Gordienko, president of Nashe Slovo Publishing House, pointed out the unique significance of the book's publication in Russia. He said that it offers Russian readers a distinctive perspective on the tragic events of the Eastern theater during World War II, underscoring the importance of preserving historical lessons through documentation.

Translator Mikhail Strelkovsky shared insights from his work on the Russian edition, noting that Russian readers lacked a comprehensive understanding of the Asian theater of World War II before 1941. He emphasized that this edition presents the diary in its entirety, unlike previous foreign versions.

Wu Hao, headmaster of the Russian Chinese International School and head of the Russian Chinese Youth Federation, also addressed the gathering. He stressed the role of the overseas Chinese community in fostering Sino-Russian friendship by sharing authentic history.

Wu highlighted the diary's educational value, which transcends national and cultural boundaries, teaching young readers about humanity's resilience and compassion in times of conflict.

The event concluded with the formal unveiling of the six-volume Russian edition of the book. The organizers presented copies to Russia Today television and the Russian State University for the Humanities, thereby furthering the reach of this vital historical document.

Originally penned by German businessman John Rabe during the Nanjing Massacre from September 1937 to February 1938, the diaries provide a detailed account of his efforts to protect over 200,000 Chinese civilians. The publication includes Rabe's diary entries, official correspondence, media reports, and his report to Adolf Hitler upon returning to Germany, making it an indispensable resource for studying the Nanjing Massacre.
